We're Nearly Halfway There.

We're Nearly Halfway There.

Jun 04 , 2021

It's June! At the end of this month we will be halfway through 2021. Remember how we looked forward to 2020? A change in decade is always welcomed more warmly than other years. And then, barely into the year, pandemic.

And remember how, weary of that pandemic, many of us having experienced profound loss, from family members and friends to jobs to that "normal" we talked about wanting to return to, we looked forward to 2021?

How has yours been so far? Certainly Covid-19 didn't fade away with the advent of a new year. As I write this, I am listening to the continued debate over the reasons there are so many jobs available and so few to fill them still. There are several sides to this complex topic. What I know from our perspective as a small and growing business, is that the largest headache we have yet encountered this year is filling roles at our bakery.

When people ask how the past year has been for us, I usually respond fliply, "People like chocolate in a pandemic." No joke, though, our business continues to build, and we are thrilled to be able to serve an increasing number of celiac, gluten sensitive and food allergic dessert lovers.

Diversity and inclusiveness are buzz words right now, and we are honored to be able to provide desserts to an increasingly diverse audience of dietary needs. In fact, I'm writing an article right now for Campus Dining Today - the member publication of National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) on that very topic: How Gem City Fine Foods has transitioned organically over the years from a small traditional bakery to dedicated gluten free, to adding nut free and soy milk free, so our vegan desserts are Top 8- now Top 9- free.

The year winds on, with promise, challenge and the requirement to continually adapt and find ways to reach our community. Really, how are you doing? We are interested to know and will be happy to help if we can.

Everyone deserves a treat now and then, regardless of dietary needs. We're doing our best to keep you covered, and that means yes, we are hiring. Check out the ad on Facebook or Indeed.

With continued commitment,
Lisa
